9/30 – 10/2/11 Neptune’s Art and Craft Show features more than 300 exhibitors who present original work in individual displays continuously along the boardwalk, overlooking the beautiful Atlantic Ocean and vast sandy beach. Take a leisurely stroll and examine the work, talk to artists or even purchase your favorite pieces! Produced in cooperation with the Contemporary Art Center of Virginia, this juried art show requires pre-registration to participate, but viewing is free and open to the public. Artists and craftsmen in all media are eligible, and acceptance is based on a blind jury process. This show does not include a section for commercial or imported products. In all cases, the spirit of our guidelines intends that the work depend heavily on the “handmade" aspect of art and craft. We do not allow buy/sell and we reserve the right to remove work from the show that violates our policies and guidelines. All accepted artists are eligible for awards. North American Sandsculpting Championship 9/28 – 10/9/11 It's been the signature event of the Virginia Beach Neptune Festival since its inception. Now it becomes the signature event of an entire region as the North American Sandsculpting Championship expands to ten days. With an international field of sculptors representing 10 countries from around the world, the expansion of the competition puts this as one of the most distinctive events of its kind in the United States.
NEW IN 2011! NEPTUNE'S KINGDOM: THE LAND OF SAND A huge tent, almost as large as a football field, will house 32 sculptures created by 12 solo and 10 doubles teams! Sculptors will compete for the largest prize purse awarded in the country. We welcome the return of some of our long-time professional artists, as well as 10 sculptors who are new to the competition in 2011!
9/30 – 10/02/11 2011 marks the 38th anniversary for the Virginia Beach Neptune Festival where every year hundreds of thousands of people celebrate at the festival’s many offerings! Daily concerts alfresco at festival stages are scattered along 32 blocks of the boardwalk and feature a variety of live music. Over 300 artisans will line the boardwalk for the Neptune Art and Craft Show, interspersed with a veritable smorgasbord of food vendors dishing out delectable delights guaranteed to please any palette. Below is general information about Neptune Festival Boardwalk Weekend. For event-specific information, please return to the events page and select your event of interest.Restrooms are located along the boardwalk and the 17th, 24th and 31st Street Parks.Beverage Tents are located at 17th, 24th, and 31st Streets. Wine is available at 24th and 31st Streets. Please have a valid photo ID. You must be 21 years or older to purchase and consume alcohol.Festival Information and Brochures can be found at kiosks on 17th and 24th Streets on the Boardwalk.First Aid station is located on 16th Street.Commemorative Posters will be for sale at 24th and 31st Streets. The easily identifiable trolley stops are conveniently located up and down Atlantic Avenue. Trolleys arrive approximately every 15 minutes, but can take longer due to heavier traffic on event weekends. Learn to identify constellations you knew were up there, but always wondered where. Learn about the very latest discoveries from a host of spacecraft and satellites as well as the Hubble Space telescope with the ViewSpace presentation that will be on display. The Virginia Beach Antiques Show 8/12 - 8/14/11 The Virginia Beach Antiques Show has been the largest and highest-quality antiques show in Hampton Roads for over 40 years. This once a year event is one of the oldest and most respected antique shows in the country and features over 130 dealers from 22 states and Canada. East Coast Surfing Championships 8/22/2011 - 8/28/2011 ECSC is North America's Oldest Running Surfing Competition and the second oldest continuously-run surfing contest in the world. More than 100 of the world's top professional surfers, male and female, and an estimated 300 amateur surfers will travel to Virginia Beach to "ride the curl" at the Oceanfront and compete for combined cash prizes of $40,000. Held annually in Virginia Beach, Virginia since 1963, ECSC is more than just surfing. Dozens of people also take part in other competitions including skimboarding, volleyball, an oceanfront 5K run, a swimsuit competition and the extreme sport of skateboarding. Live bands perform for free on an oceanfront stage throughout the weekend. A cost is involved to participate in competitions, but all activities are free and open to the public. 8/26 - 8/27/11 FunkFest celebrates the music generated over the years by influential legends such as James Brown, Sly and the Family Stone, George Clinton, and The Ohio Players. Funk is an American musical style that originated in the mid-to late-1960’s when African-American musicians blended soul music, soulful jazz, and R&B into a rhythmic, danceable new form of music. Funk brings a strong rhythmic groove of electric bass and drums to the foreground. FunkFest features bands in free concerts on a stage on the beach at 24th Street. Stars & Stripes Explosion – July 4th Multiple live performances on oceanfront stages attract tens of thousands of visitors and residents of Hampton Roads to a “star-spangled” salute to this great country of ours at Stars & Stripes Explosion! Musical acts offer something for everyone with tribute bands saluting some of the biggest names in music. From 8:00pm-9:30pm, a stage erected right on the beach at 20th Street becomes the focal point for performances by Symphonicity (the symphony orchestra of Virginia Beach) together with the Virginia Beach Chorale. This musical program encompasses patriotic songs, Broadway standards, movie themes, and folk music. Mid-Atlantic Hermit Crab Challengee 7/23/11 The Crab is King at this one-of-a-kind event that’s fun for the whole family! Along with the Crustacean 500 race, participants may enter the Miss Curvaceous Crustacean Beauty Pageant. At the pageant, hermit crabs are presented in uniquely-decorated displays and judged on beauty and creativity. Hermit crab owners are encouraged to build a unique display for their crab. Past winners have included themed entries like “Spider Crab,” “Beauty and the Crab,” and “Pirates of the Crabibbean!” Approximately 300 hermit crabs participate in the Mid-Atlantic Hermit Crab Challenge each year. 4/30 – 5/02/10 A collaboration between the Courthouse Galleries in Portsmouth and the Beachevents program, the Atlantic Coast Kite Festival is an exciting weekend of high-flying kites and fun for families, participants, and spectators of all ages! A reception at the Courthouse Galleries on Friday night provides an appropriate “kick-off” celebration for the entire weekend. Here, visitors are allowed free admission to the galleries, enjoy live entertainment, and interact with avid kite fliers from across the country.

Remember the Music - Remember the Heroes 5/28 – 5/30/10 Spend Memorial Weekend at the Virginia Beach oceanfront for this special tribute to our military heroes! It's a Star-Spangled Spectacular as bands from our Armed Forces perform throughout the weekend on stages under the stars. Travel the "Heroes Walk" and immerse yourself in the history of our nation's involvement in military endeavors throughout history. The Heroes Walk features essays written by local high school students displayed along the boardwalk from 17th to 25th Streets.
Annual Pungo Strawberry Festival 5/28 – 5/30/10 Along with beautiful beaches, Virginia Beach has miles and miles of beautiful farmland. Every year the Pungo Strawberry Festival is held on Memorial Day weekend. We are especially excited about this year's festival as we will be celebrating our 27th Anniversary. Not only does the Festival have all the strawberries you can eat offered in over 50 different ways, but we have a pie eating contest, strawberry bake-off, continuous entertainment on three stages, a parade, one of the largest carnivals on the east coast, livestock show and sale, a multi-million dollar military display, pig races, youth art show, and some of the most unique arts and crafts exhibited anywhere.
